This could be it - McAllen City Commissioners Meeting to Decide on Opening Private Prison Bid

what_we_want_our_city_known_for_copy_2.pngIf we keep up the pressure, McAllen could be days away from dropping plans to build a private prison.

Last week, more than 60 people attended a public hearing to protest the opening of a 1,000-bed privately-run prison in McAllen. The lone bid — submitted by Florida-based GEO Group — has yet to be unsealed.

Now the City meeting where the commission will decide whether to open the lone bid is this Monday and Mayor Darling has gone on record saying that if the bid proposal isn't opened by city commissioners at this meeting, the issue will most likely be dropped.

If we fill the meeting and speak at the public comment period about all the reasons McAllen should not bring a private prison to town, City Commissioners could decide not to open the GEO Group bid and could drop the issue all together!
